In this time of great uncertainty, we know that many people have questions about unemployment insurance. While all these claims are handled by the Virginia Employment Commission, we hope that the questions and answers below are helpful.
The Virginia Employment Commission (VEC) administers the unemployment compensation program that provides temporary financial assistance to individuals who become unemployed through no fault of their own. Benefits are paid through taxes on employers covered under the Virginia Unemployment Compensation Act. No part of the cost of your unemployment benefits is deducted from your earnings.(Source: https://www.vec.virginia.gov/unemployed/resources/your-unemployment-benefit-rights-and-responsibilities)
No. The CARES Act provides increased benefits for workers collecting unemployment insurance by $600 for claims effective March 29th until July 31st. This provision is the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation (FPUC) program. Payments to eligible claimants will be made automatically in conjunction with their weekly claim. Benefit weeks for unemployment end on Saturday. Every Sunday, Monday or Tuesday, either call 1-800-897-5630 to file via phone or login to your account at vawc.virginia.gov.
If you work and your gross income for the week is less than your weekly benefit amount, that gross amount less $50 will be deducted from your weekly benefit amount. If your gross earnings equal or exceed your weekly benefit amount, you will not receive benefits for that week. (https://www.vec.virginia.gov/unemployed/benefits-information/benefits-eligibility)
The Virginia Employment Commission is working to establish this new enhancement to the unemployment insurance program. We will notify claimants who are potentially eligible for PEUC benefits based on their previous unemployment insurance claim. (More information: https://www.vec.virginia.gov/html/peuc.html)
You can change your method of payment online at www.vec.virginia.gov or by calling the VRS at 1-800-897-5630. (https://www.vec.virginia.gov/unemployed/resources/your-unemployment-benefit-rights-and-responsibilities)
Sometimes, weekly payments may be delayed, due to various reasons. You may consider allowing a few additional days for your payment to be processed before contacting the VEC.
